Distortion is a great tool you can use in your music production to spice them up. And it doesn't only have to be a tool for rock and metal styles. It can be used in any genre to add some interest, and tonal variance in your productions. In this class Gary will go through how to use a Distortion unit into your digital audio workstation (DAW). He'll go through the different types and variances of distortion like overdrive, saturation, amp emulation and bitcrushing. Plus, how they can be used on different instruments

You'll learn the following:

  • What is Distortion
  • The Different Types of Distortion
  • a Live Demo using Distortion on Guitars
  • a Live Demo using Distortion with Other Effects

After watching this class you'll have a much better understanding on how Distortion works, and the best ways to use them in your music productions.

Class Project

In this class project its time to take action and use some distortion on your own tracks.

So going what you have learnt in the course try the following:

  • Choose a track you want to add some distortion to.
  • Choose a type to use: overdrive, distortion, amp emulation, bitcrushing, etc
  • Tweak the Settings to find a sound that fits well with your track.
  • Try using some modulation effects before and after the distortion unit, and see how it alters the sound.
  • Try this a couple of times on different tracks to hear how distortion can add some interests and tonal variance in your productions.
