PUREMIX Mastering Stylebook Vol.1

This is the first volume of Friedemann Tischmeyer's new series of videos.

To further the tradition of his "Internal Mixing" series, Tischmeyer takes his meticulous approach to explaining the art of sound by deconstructing the mastering process of an acoustic pop song by Banda Magda, originally mixed by Fab Dupont.

He describes the chain of processes he uses in minute details and gives tips on how to choose and setup your processing for your own mastering sessions. This in-the-box journey will give you insights on the mastering frame of mind, and ideas on how to correct, enhance, and get the most out of a mix in order to create a final product. This is the first installment of a multipart series to be published in the coming months.

PUREMIX Mastering Stylebook Vol.2

Friedemann gives a detailed view over his shoulder when he applies a relative invasive strategy to rescue a singer/songwriter mix from sounding boxy. First, he shows how to remove annoying ringing tones coming from the cymbals by using spectral restoration tool 'ReNovator' to prepare the mix for mastering.

With his multi-EQ approach he creates a balanced frequency distribution by using surgical and esthetical EQs in a complimentary manner to give some warmth back and add depth and width by employing 'wanted phase artifacts'. With further enhancement tools he supports the vitality and creates more depth and unity, also by applying reverb.

Finally, Friedemann shows how to use single band compression and limiting - in conjunction with various metering strategies - to achieve loudness without destroying the dynamic integrity of the mix. You will learn how to interpret various new metering values like TPL, PLR, and LUFS in modern mastering practice.

This video is more than just a mastering sample for a specific task or genre: it gives a deep insight into Fridemann's personal working approach, especially when it comes to loudness-related decisions (which is - in most mastering situations - the case).

The workflow in Sequoia can easily be adapted to other common DAWs. Friedemann has mastered for artists such as Alan Parsons, Steely Dan, Johnny Cash, Iron Maiden, is inventor of the Dynamic Range Meter and founder of the Mastering Academy.

PUREMIX Mastering Stylebook Vol.3

Hybrid-mastering of a latin pop easy listening song. In Vol.3 of the Mastering Stylebook series Friedemann Tischmeyer shows a hybrid approach giving this song a fresh and sparkling impression using a mix of selected plug-ins and analog outboard gear.

This time he is working with Steinberg´s WaveLab and shows an ideal hybrid mastering studio setup which has been realized in the 15Hz - Mastering Academy studio in Hamburg / Germany. The song was performed by the Los Angeles resident Brazilian musician Rogerio Jardim.

Friedemann begins by building a mental aural vision before we actually start petting the gear. Then he will run you step by step through the setup, explaining the gear and why he has applied particular settings in order to realize the initially built vision of a fresh and sparkling sound.

Down the road you will learn how to use a dynamic EQ to reduce S-problems within a mastering process. He will also show you how he controls the highs and create a modern and bright sound without making it harsh.

The Mastering Stylebook series allows you to get impulses and inspiration to solve specific challenges and tasks which show up in the daily mastering practice. By practicing with the original mix with your personal choice of tools you will be able to compare your result with Friedemann´s master. You can certainly also apply the techniques used with the analog hardware in this video with your choice of plug-in substitutes.
