Longstoryshort VIDEO Q&A Part 3 Drum Basics

programming, sound selection, processing, and mixing of your drums

  • my starting point is identifying what the best groove is going to be for the record. i'll usually start a project with basic drum loops and idenfity what the right "groove" is for the record
  • i work with a mix of MIDI and loops. MIDI offers me control with a lack of groove, and audio gives me soul, but with less control. MIDI tends to be all one shots. Track delay is awesome for shifting sounds slightly before or after the kick (amazing on claps)
  • sound selection is all instinct honestly. my initial thoughts are groove, and energy. what's making things move along at the right pace. for energetic house/drops, i like a constant open hi hat down the middle, dominating the highs and the rest of the high end around it providing the groove. i look to loops for that and i like to make sure i have something covering the 16ths, the 8ths, and then program swung elements around it when appropriate.
  • i tend to use a lot of garage influence in my drum work, and i like using garage rim shots for percussion along with snare rolls
  • extracting groove is super helpful, and there's a video where i slow down the drums a ton to find the pocket in swing/grooves. this has been helping me BIG time.
  • to get an idea of processing/mixing, lets do a drum pattern together.
