What’s it about?
Richard Henshall of prog-titans, Haken, is known for fusing hard-hitting riffs with technical soloing and a wide harmonic vocabulary to create edge-of-the-seat and interesting compositions. In Precision Riffs Vol.1, he shares five etudes that reveal the mechanics behind his unique approach.

Each etude targets a distinct set of skills and sonic textures. From fast black metal-inspired tremolo picking to ultra-modern natural harmonics, you’ll tighten your grip on vital techniques and create a foundation to build elevated rhythm ideas.

Richard breaks each etude down through in-depth lessons, showing you how to play them with insights on technical hurdles and how to overcome them. Focused exercises reinforce core techniques, ensuring you build a solid foundation for complex riffing.

How will this release help me?

Rhythmic Precision
Step up your speed and accuracy as you pick and palm-mute your way to a high-impact rhythm approach. Sharpen your down picking, master string-skipping with alternate picking, and go full throttle with dark, moody tremolo picking.

Scale and Chord Mastery
From Richard’s favourite half-whole scale to the familiar terrain of E minor Aeolian, you’ll explore and apply a range of scale and chordal ideas to break free from conventional riffing patterns. Blend major 7th and minor 6th extensions, experiment with augmented arpeggios for progressive phrasing, and inject a touch of tension with diminished ideas.

Infuse Rhythm with Lead Techniques
Combine essential rhythm concepts with soloing skills to give your riffs a fresh edge. Use hammer-ons from open strings for fluid legato phrasing, tapping for increased mobility, and natural harmonics for added texture. Picking provides the power; Richard shows you how to add the flourish.

From the expert
You can't play solos all the time, so what are you going to do for the other 95% of every song? Here's your chance to sharpen up your riff chops with one of the masters. Rich Henshall takes you through a huge range of sounds and techniques, helping you to get more from your chords and riffs while tightening your sense of rhythm and timing.

Etude Breakdowns

Etude 1
A Haken-style opening riff based on big opening chords that challenges your palm mutes. You’ll then play a variant of the opening chords and combine them with carefully accented tremolo picking. Once you’ve tackled one of Richard’s favourite chords and some stretchy alternate-picked arpeggios, you’ll finish the etude with a slidey phrase that fans of Polyphia will love!

Etude 2
Here comes the groove! Hammer-on heavy and oozing nu-metal vibes, this etude goes on a wild ride. After the pentatonic opening, you’ll navigate a tricky lead guitar-inspired lick and then go back into more groove. Think neo-classical into Lamb of God. It’s important to note how the half-time beat, often used in hardcore breakdowns, completely changes the feel. Hammer-ons bring the etude home, but not before some five-over-four prog flavours.

Etude 3
It starts with an evil flat 9 from the half-whole scale, with a quick bend and release. The mixed-up palm mutes and alternate picked 16th notes then transition into the next power chord heavy section, with a distinctly old-school thrash feel. The etude then opens up with Opeth-style chords, accentuated by a half-time feel. Your next challenge is to not headbang. Richard sets into a massive groove before the controlled chaos of the natural harmonics. It’s all finished with a Dream Theater-inspired descending lick.

Etude 4
The sinister etude with some tricky stretches! The sedate 6/8 of the introduction then gives way to an inside picking variation of the same chords. After a modulation, things go full-on black metal with a tremolo-picked section that screams of bands like Behemoth. The final genre switch-up comes with some prog and more inside-picking.

Etude 5
Starting with an ultra-modern, muted percussive riff, this etude asks you to focus on synchronisation and stretching. Some slidey fun and a big chunky power chord move the etude forward before the challenge of picking an arpeggio across multiple strings. The piece then finishes with tapping that speaks of modern-prog and djent while helping to amplify the groove.
