The course is structured in a way that mirrors the format of the online Grade 5 exam. However, we will make absolutely sure that all your foundational knowledge in each topic is secure, before tackling the relevant exam questions together. Here's what your journey will look like:
- Rhythm Essentials: In the first section, we will cover note values, time signatures, triplets, duplets and other irregular time divisions.
- Rhythm Exam Questions: Examples of all questions related to rhythm, including how to convert simple and compound time.
- Pitch Essentials: Reading in all four clefs, enharmonic equivalents and the piano keyboard.
- Pitch Exam Questions Part 1: Here we will cover the first two questions in the Pitch section. (We revisit Pitch again later on, once we have mastered keys, scales and intervals.)
- Keys and Scales: Major and minor scales and key signatures with up to six sharps or flats.
- Keys and Scales Exam Questions: Identifying key signatures, the chromatic scale and scale degrees.
- Intervals: Understanding intervals and compound intervals.
- Intervals Exam Questions: Naming and creating intervals.
- Pitch Exam Questions Part 2: Now we are ready to answer the final two questions in the Pitch section which are related to Transposition.
- Chords: Triads, inversions and cadences.
- Chords Exam Questions: Recognising chords and cadences.
- Terms, Signs and Instruments: Musical terms, ornaments and orchestral instruments.
- Music in Context: The final section of the exam where we address a series of questions about a single piece of music, drawing upon all of the knowledge we have learned so far.
