When artists like Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding and many more hit the scene some 70 years ago with their new, vocal-driven collage of gospel, jazz and blues, they made an indelible mark on music history. Since then, classic soul has produced more iconic artists and timeless hits than arguably any other genre to this day.

Fusing classic soul with funk, jazz, fusion, hip-hop, pop and electronic, soul of today is a patchwork of styles where no rules apply other than those that have been given since day one: great melodic and rhythmic foundations. However, seeing as the word “modern” implies a fleeing snapshot of the exact moment of now, this collection of EZkeys MIDI rather sets out to capture the evolution of post-classic soul from the late 1990s through to today.

Let's all agree: the soundtrack to the '80s had a shrill synth hook, a repetitive eighth-note bass and a machine-like beat in it. But not only that, synth completely overthrew culture on a whole. With its extraordinary aesthetics, it permeated arts, films and fashion and, frankly, made an entire generation unanimously march to its static beat. Today, unlike many other styles that just fizzled out, it's slung back and gone full circle.

Shimmering in blinding neon pastels, the ’80s was an era when technology forced its way to the forefront and got its first permanent foothold in mainstream music culture. It was a time when acoustic and electronic merged to form all-together new sounds, musical expressions and even genres. In all of this, the bass of course played a tremendous part – not least in the shape of the surging use of the synth filling its traditional role.
