Live drums are a staple in most genres of music. In hip-hop music, we have a tendency to take live drum samples and process them until they smack the way they ought to. Deep Marsh, our latest drum sample kit, is no exception. We recorded one shots from a live drumset, and dipped each sound in a swamp of analog processing (outboard compression, analog tape, Pultec style EQ) until each hit took on a larger-than-life persona of it’s own.

In Sound Experiments, Paul Steinbeck offers an in-depth historical and musical investigation of the collective, analyzing individual performances and formal innovations in captivating detail. He pays particular attention to compositions by Muhal Richard Abrams and Roscoe Mitchell, the Association’s leading figures, as well as Anthony Braxton, George Lewis (and his famous computer-music experiment, Voyager), Wadada Leo Smith, and Henry Threadgill, along with younger AACM members such as Mike Reed, Tomeka Reid, and Nicole Mitchell.
